It's exciting to be updating the smallest room in the house, which tends to be forgotten in the home interior stakes. If you're currently modernising your bathroom, don't lose sight of the fact that, over and above any other consideration, this is a functional room. One way of improving the practicality of your bathroom is by adding an electric shower.

Electric showers can be fitted into any domestic water system, yet they work independently of the system, which means that you can take a shower even when the domestic hot water system is switched off. This is vastly different to the power showers that are available on the market, which simply pump water at high pressure from existing hot and cold water tanks. Cold water in the tank means a cold shower.

The next thing to remember is that, if you have a combination boiler or an unvented heating system, you will not be able to install a power shower into your current system; the same applies if your cold water is at mains pressure. Electric showers can be installed into any water system.

When it comes to economy of use, the electric shower beats virtually every other shower system hands down. This type of shower's independence means that only the amount of water you need is heated for each shower, whereas other types of shower need a whole tank full of the stuff! This wonderful characteristic means that your new electric shower will repay you for its purchase many times over.

And if nothing else persuades you as to the benefits of the electric shower, just think back to the times your mixer shower has poured scalding water over you, just because somebody else in the house has turned on a cold tap. Mixer showers are not generally thermostatically controlled, so you are just as likely to be doused in cold or tepid water from such a system.

And installation of a thermostatic mixer type shower is costly; far more costly than simply replacing the mixer shower with an electric shower. You could, of course, get a plumber to fit the requisite flange to protect you from sudden scalding but a plumber's hourly charge will soon add up to more than the cost of a new shower.

It is easy to get confused when there are so many different types of shower on the market, and it's easy to make the wrong choice. By sticking with well known makes such as Triton or Mira, not only will you have a product to trust, you will also get a choice of ratings - from 8.5kw through 9.5kw and up to 10.5kw.

For price, convenience, economy and speed of use, electric showers win hands down.
